I Bought 3 Roborock Models in 18 Months. Here's What I Learned About Mapping, Mopping, and Mismatched Expectations.
I run a small property management team. We handle about 12 short-term rentals, plus my own home. When I decided to automate the cleaning for all of them, I figured Roborock was the obvious choice. The reviews were glowing, the tech specs looked solid, and the price point for the Q-series seemed reasonable for our budget.
I was wrong about one thing, though. Not about buying Roborock—the units themselves are great. I was wrong to think there was one right model for every situation. Everything I'd read online said "the Q7 Max+ is the best value." In practice, for our specific use case—a mix of hardwood, low-pile carpet, and one apartment with a nightmare shag rug—the mid-tier Q5 Max+ actually delivered more consistent results than the premium one.
Every house is different. So, instead of telling you which Roborock to buy, I'll break down three real-world scenarios I encountered. You'll figure out which one matches your home.
There Is No Single "Best" Roborock
This isn't a cop-out. It's the reality after running these machines for over a year. The best robot vacuum is the one that doesn't get stuck, doesn't miss a spot, and doesn't turn your mop pad into a muddy smear across the living room. And that depends on your floor, your furniture, and your tolerance for maintenance.
I bought the Roborock S5 first (a used unit for my own house, to test the waters). Then, for the rentals, I ordered two Q5 Max+ units. After six months, I upgraded one rental and my living room to the Q7 Max+. The total cost of my mistakes? About $400 in unnecessary spending, plus a lot of time crawling under furniture to retrieve stuck robots. (Ugh.)
Here's what I learned about which model fits which home.
Scenario A: The All-Hardwood, Open-Plan Home
This is the ideal environment for any robot vacuum. No low thresholds, no thick carpets, just continuous flat surfaces. If you live in a modern apartment or a renovated loft, congratulations: you have the easiest decision.
The pick: Roborock Q5 Max+
I know, the Q7 Max+ has the better mopping system (the ultra-fast sonic one). But on smooth hardwood, the Q5 Max+ is 85% as good at mopping, and it's significantly cheaper. The suction difference (4200Pa vs 5500Pa) is irrelevant on hard floors. You don't need the extra power.
Where the Q5 Max+ shines is its navigation. It uses the same LiDAR as the more expensive models, so it maps your home in minutes and never, ever bumps into furniture. For us, it was a set-it-and-forget-it solution for the ground floor of one rental.
I still kick myself for buying the Q7 Max+ for that unit first. If I'd stuck with the Q5, I would've saved $250 that went toward buying a second unit for another property.
One thing to watch: the Q5 Max+ doesn't have the self-cleaning dock option (the one that washes the mop). For a full-hardwood home, this isn't a dealbreaker because the mop doesn't get caked with mud. You'll wash the pad yourself once a week. It's fine—honestly, the self-cleaning dock is for people with really dirty floors.
Scenario B: The Mixed-Floor Home (Hardwood + Low-Pile Carpet)
This is the most common scenario. Most of us have a living room with a rug, or a bedroom with low-pile carpet. The robot has to transition between surfaces without dragging dirt from one to the other.
The pick: Roborock Q7 Max+ (or S7 MaxV if you have the budget)
Here's why: the Q7 Max+ has the better overall mopping system and the stronger suction. When the robot moves from hardwood onto the carpet, it knows (via its sensor) to lift the mop pad. If you use the Q5 Max+ on mixed floors, the mop pad stays down on the carpet, which basically just dampens the fibers. Not ideal.
Also, the Q7 Max+ does a better job detecting thresholds. I had one rental with a 1.5cm transition strip between the tile kitchen and the carpeted living room. The Q5 Max+ got stuck there maybe 2 times a week. The Q7 Max+? It learned to slow down and push over it after one failed attempt. (Note to self: I should have bought the rubber threshold ramps earlier.)
The expected value said buying the cheaper Q5 was smarter. The downside of the Q7 Max+ was a $400 price difference. But the upside—no false starts, no stuck robot calls from guests—was worth every cent. That's the lesson I keep learning: reliability beats cost savings when you're not the one troubleshooting.
Scenario C: The Home With High-Pile Carpet or Rugs
Here's where things get complicated. If you have thick, high-pile carpet (the kind your feet sink into), or a shag rug, a standard robot vacuum struggles. The sensors get confused, the wheels lose traction, and the suction power needs to be much higher.
The pick: Skip the Q-series entirely. Look at the Roborock S7 MaxV or S8 Pro Ultra.
I learned this the hard way with the S5 in my own bedroom. The S5 (and the Q-series) have a relatively low clearance—about 10mm. On my high-pile carpet, the robot would literally dig itself into a trench, triggering the cliff sensor and stopping. It also couldn't navigate the thick rug in my living room without getting stuck on the fringe.
The S7 MaxV and S8 Pro Ultra have a higher ground clearance and, more importantly, the "vibraRise" mop system that lifts much higher off the carpet. They also have stronger motors that can handle carpet resistance. They're more expensive (think $800+ for the S8 Pro Ultra with the self-emptying dock), but they're the only Roborock truly designed for thick carpets.
Calculated the worst case: buy the Q7 Max+ for $600 and risk it. Best case: it works, I save $400. The expected value said go for it, but the downside—a useless robot stuck on a $2,000 rug—felt catastrophic. I borrowed a friend's older Roomba for that room instead. (Which, honestly, handled the carpet way better, but mopped worse. Ugh, compromises.)
How to Figure Out Your Scenario
So, which are you? It's not about budget. It's about your floor. Here's a quick checklist I use now before I recommend any robot to a property owner:
- Check your carpet pile: If it's more than 1cm thick (low-pile is usually 0.5-1cm), you likely need the S7/S8 series. Don't hope the Q-series will magically handle it.
- Check your thresholds: If you have any transition strips more than 1.5cm tall, prepare for the robot to get stuck. The Q7 handles them better than the Q5. The S8 handles them better than both.
- Check your furniture clearance: Most Roborocks are about 10cm tall. If your couch or bed has less clearance, the robot will wedge itself under it and spin its wheels until the battery dies. (I dealt with this twice.)
- Decide on mopping priority: Do you need a dedicated mop? If you live in a dry climate and don't need to wet-mop, even the S5 will suffice. If you have tile floors and kids, the Q7 or S7's sonic mopping is worth it.
I'd rather spend 10 minutes helping you figure out your floor setup than deal with the headache of a mismatched robot later. Trust me: the best Roborock is the one that runs without you thinking about it. For most people, that's the Q5 Max+ for hardwood, or the Q7 Max+ for mixed floors. For the thick-carpet enthusiasts? You'll need to spend a bit more—but at least you won't have to crawl under your couch to retrieve it.
