The rest is consumables, repair labor, and the occasional "smart feature" that costs more to fix than it saves in convenience.

It's the kind of product with a real field history.

The Z70 is the newer model with a genuinely interesting feature: a robotic arm that picks up small objects—socks, crumpled paper, pet toys—before they jam the vacuum. It was a concept video five years ago. Now it's a shipping product. But it's also year-one hardware, and year-one hardware has a cost beyond the price on the box.

I'm not a robotics engineer, so I can't speak to arm actuator durability at a component level. What I can give you is the procurement view: what do these machines actually cost to own, maintain, and keep operational?

Dimension 1: Purchase Price vs. the Consumables Reality

Here's where most buying decisions are made. And where most of them go wrong.

The Q Revo lists around $899. Nobody pays list—we paid $649 per unit in November 2024 during a standard sale. The Z70 sits at a meaningfully higher price point, though street quotes vary enough by region and reseller that I'd rather not pin a number on it. Verify current pricing before you budget. That entry-price gap alone makes a lot of people stop reading and pick a side.

But here's the thing: these dock-based robots are all consumable-hungry. And the Q Revo and Z70 share essentially the same self-cleaning dock architecture, which means they burn through identical supplies. Let me walk through the annual per-unit budget we track across our fleet:

  • Dust bags. At moderate usage in a two-bedroom rental, the dock bag fills every 6–8 weeks. That's six bags a year. Roborock's proprietary bags run about $3–4 each in multi-packs. Generic bags are cheaper, but the seal fit is worse—we learned that lesson with a clogged chute in 2023.
  • Filters. The manual says every 3–6 months. We replace at four because rentals get pet dander and sand tracked in. Three filters a year, roughly $10–12 each.
  • Mop pads. The spinning pads wear visibly on tile transitions. Every three months, maybe four if the property is mostly carpet.

Which leads to a counterintuitive conclusion: the Z70's higher entry price is not actually the main reason to hesitate. The consumable load is a wash between the two. The difference that matters shows up in the next dimension.

Dimension 2: The Arm Is a Moving-Parts Bet

I have mixed feelings about the Z70's arm. On one hand, it solves a genuinely annoying problem: the "robot stuck on a sock" call. Every property manager knows it. It's real, it's repetitive, and it costs money each time. On the other hand, I've been burned by "revolutionary" attachments enough times to know that every moving part is a future repair line item.

People assume the more expensive robot is automatically the more durable one. The relationship, in my experience, runs the other direction: durability is proven, not priced. The Q Revo has been in the field long enough that we can see its failure patterns. The main brush axle wears. The side brush snaps if it catches a bed frame at the wrong angle. The dock's drying fan occasionally needs replacing. Predictable. Documented. Parts available from multiple sources.

The Z70's arm is a separate electromechanical subassembly. Even if Roborock engineered it well—and their build quality is above industry average—you're buying year-one hardware. Press releases and early YouTube reviews are nice. Statistically significant field data isn't available yet, because the product hasn't been out long enough to generate it.

From a procurement standpoint, unquantified risk is still risk. When a unit goes down in a rental property, I'm not just paying for the repair—I'm paying for a cleaner's second trip or a guest discount to smooth over the complaint. Downtime cost for us consistently runs 2–3x the repair cost. Verdict: the Q Revo's maturity is worth real money. Not because the Z70 is unreliable, but because reliability is a data point, and only one of these machines has actual data.

Dimension 3: The Hidden Feature Costs You Actually Feel

Two things look great on the box and show up differently on an invoice.

First: energy claims. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental marketing claims need substantiation. But "eco mode" is vague enough to mean anything. For context, a 1,600-watt Dyson hair dryer costs maybe $0.25 an hour to run at typical electricity rates. A robot vacuum idles around 40–60 watts under load—the annual energy difference between eco and standard modes is a rounding error, call it $3–5 per year. If a price premium is justified by "energy savings," the math doesn't add up.

Second: obstacle-avoidance tiers. The Q Revo's obstacle avoidance in 2024 was already genuinely good. It handled phone chargers, shoelaces, and the occasional errant Lego without drama. The Z70's arm is a clear upgrade for specific scenarios—homes where pet toys migrate constantly, or where someone can't easily pre-clear the floor. But in a typical rental property, guests don't leave socks on the floor as often as the marketing videos suggest. The feature is solving a problem you might not have.

This is where the conventional "more advanced = worth more" logic breaks down. The Z70's premium features are only worth paying for if your floor's failure modes actually demand them. That's not a critique of the Z70. It's a reminder that nobody puts use-case dependency on a spec sheet.

So Which One Should You Buy?

Same framework I'd use for our own fleet decisions.

Buy the Q Revo if you're equipping rental properties, a home with average daily clutter, or anything where the robot needs to be dependable and cheap to keep running. It's the boring answer. Boring is good when your quarterly budget depends on predictable invoices.

Consider the Z70 if you have a specific, recurring small-object problem. Pets with toys in permanent rotation. A household where mobility challenges mean the floor can't always be pre-cleared. In those cases, the arm can pay for itself by eliminating the "stalled on a sock" service event—which at our labor rates is a $40+ problem every time. Two or three of those a year, and the price premium starts looking reasonable.

And if you want the Z70 just because it's newer: wait. Let the first production year shake out. That's what I'm doing with our next fleet refresh. The Z70's technology is clearly the direction the industry is heading. But the fundamentals haven't changed—floor cleaning still comes down to suction, brushes, navigation, and mopping contact. What has changed is the execution, and that's worth respecting. Just don't fund the beta phase unless you're getting paid to be the early adopter.
