Here's the thing: the most expensive appliance isn't the one with the highest price tag. It's the one you buy twice. In my 2024 spend audit, I compared purchase orders with lifetime costs across 40+ household and office products, and the true cost of the 'cheap' option was 30–60% higher once consumables, repairs, and energy were included.
I'm a procurement manager at a 38-person company. I've managed a facilities and office services budget of about $120,000 per year for six years, negotiated with 120+ vendors, and documented every order in our cost tracking system. That doesn't make me an engineer. It makes me the person who signs for the second purchase when the first one fails.

According to Energy Star's typical-use estimates (2025), a new certified refrigerator in that size range can use roughly 300–400 kWh per year, or about 0.8–1.1 kWh per day. Older units often use much more. The exact answer depends on the model, room temperature, and how often the door opens.
Why does this matter? Because every watt-hour is money. At $0.15 per kWh, a refrigerator that uses 2 kWh per day costs about $109 per year. One that uses 1 kWh per day costs about $55. Over a 12-year lifespan, the difference is more than $600. So when a vendor tells you it's 'energy efficient,' ask for the annual kWh number, not the wattage.
Small orders deserve the same math
One more thing: I'm a believer in small-customer friendliness. When I was starting out, the vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential.

When TCO math doesn't rule

If you're renting a space and won't own a major appliance for long, energy use and lifespan matter less. And if a product is brand new with no service history, don't pretend your spreadsheet is better than the market's guess.
But for the categories I see over and over—robot vacuums, stick vacuums, bags, styling tools, refrigerators—the TCO approach is the difference between a budget that looks good on paper and one that actually holds up.
Buy the cost, not the appliance. Your bank account will thank you later.
